I never had banana pancakes, but I know how they smell like.

To me, they smell like fried aubergines. Or, is it the other way round — aubergines smell like bananas?

Banana smell comes from isoamyl acetate. Is there any objective value to smell on the level above that? It seems to be just an interpretation — a brain response to information from olfactory receptors.

Maybe to you fried aubergines smell like schnitzel, or holidays, or bouncy balls, and to a pregnant woman like washing powder. One isoamyl acetate, so many meanings.
